Picture books on Kindle require KF8 fixed-layout (FXL) with a declared original-resolution in com.kindle.book metadata — reflowable EPUB strips your spreads and floats text away from illustrations. KDP Kids+ category access is gated to titles enrolled in KDP Select with the Children’s eBooks classification and an interest-age range set at upload, and Amazon rejects FXL files missing the region-mag panel-zoom or text-image overlay tags when the page contains embedded text.
Device rendering across the Kindle line
A FXL children’s book renders in full color on Kindle Fire and Kindle Kids tablets, falls back to greyscale on Paperwhite, and is hidden entirely from the older non-touch Kindles. Early readers with selectable text should ship as reflowable with embedded fonts and a 1.5x line-height; image-only picture books need 300 DPI source art at the exact trim ratio, otherwise Amazon’s converter pillarboxes the spread on 7-inch screens.
