What Book Editing Actually Covers

“Book editing” is a category, not a single service. It contains four distinct passes that solve different problems: developmental editing fixes structure, line editing fixes prose, copy editing fixes mechanics, and proofreading fixes errors that survived everything else. They’re sequential. Run them in the wrong order and you waste money fixing prose that gets cut or polishing typos in scenes that won’t make the final draft.

The four edit types, in the order they belong

  • Developmental editing — structure, pacing, character arcs, plot logic, scene order. Done before your manuscript is final, because the notes will trigger rewrites. For non-fiction, this covers argument structure, evidence flow, and chapter sequencing.
  • Line editing — sentence rhythm, word choice, paragraph flow, voice consistency. Goes through every line, not just every page. Slower than copy editing because each sentence is rewritten or rebuilt for clarity.
  • Copy editing — grammar, punctuation, syntax, style-guide adherence (Chicago, AP, MLA), continuity tracking (character details, timelines, place names). Mechanical and deterministic.
  • Proofreading — the final pass that catches typos, formatting glitches, and errors that survived earlier rounds. Should happen on the typeset proof, not on the editing manuscript.

Word-count math, made painless

Editing turnaround scales with your manuscript length and the depth of the pass. As a working estimate: a 70,000-word novel runs about 14 business days for a copy edit, 21 days for a line edit, and 28 days for a developmental pass. Non-fiction typically moves slightly faster because it has fewer voice-and-rhythm decisions to weigh. Multi-pass schedules — line edit, then copy edit, then proofread — should be planned 8-10 weeks before your launch date.

Why mixing levels is a false economy

Some authors ask for “a developmental edit and copy edit at the same time.” Don’t. The developmental pass will trigger rewrites that re-introduce the exact errors the copy edit just fixed. Sequence the work: developmental first, rewrite, line edit, copy edit, proofread. Each pass takes the manuscript closer to final, and skipping the order rebuilds work that’s already been paid for.

Why Authors Choose Professional Book Editing

  • Distance. You can’t see your own blind spots. An editor catches the things your brain auto-corrects.
  • Genre fluency. An experienced fiction editor knows what cozy mystery readers expect, what thriller pacing demands, what literary fiction allows.
  • Style-guide consistency. Chicago for trade fiction, AP for journalism-style non-fiction, MLA for academic. The right one applied throughout.
  • Reader respect. Reviews on Amazon mention typos. Reviews on Goodreads mention pacing. Both are editing problems, and both directly affect sales.

Editors specialize by genre — fiction, children’s books, Christian, fantasy, and short stories. Match the editor to the category; sentence-level work moves faster when the editor already knows the conventions of the genre.

Frequently Asked Questions About Book Editing

Which type of book editing do I actually need?
If your story works but the prose is rough, you need line and copy editing. If the prose works but the structure feels off, you need developmental editing. If everything works and you just want the typos and inconsistencies caught, you need proofreading. Most full-length manuscripts need at least two of the four passes.

How long does book editing take?
Roughly: 6,000-8,000 words per day for developmental editing, 4,000-5,000 words for line/copy editing, and 10,000-15,000 words for proofreading. A 70,000-word novel runs about two weeks for a copy edit, three weeks for line editing, four weeks for developmental work.

Will the editor change my voice?
No. Line and copy editing preserve voice; the editor flags issues and suggests fixes you can accept or reject. Developmental editing comments on structure and craft but leaves the actual rewriting to you.

How is editing priced?
By the word, not by the hour. A copy edit is $8 per thousand words; developmental editing is $16 per thousand. A 70,000-word novel runs $560 for a copy edit, $1,120 for a developmental pass.

Can you edit a manuscript that’s already been edited once?
Yes. We often handle a second pass after the author has incorporated developmental notes — a fresh editor catches issues the first pass introduced or didn’t reach. Tell us what level was done previously so we don’t duplicate work.
