Hardcover Book Formatting Services

Publishing a hardcover book gives your work a premium, professional feel that readers love to hold and display. With Amazon KDP now offering hardcover printing, self-published authors can finally offer case laminate hardcovers without needing a traditional publisher.

At Word-2-Kindle, we format your book to meet KDP’s exact hardcover specifications—including trim size, margins, bleed, spine width, and cover template requirements. Whether you’re publishing fiction, nonfiction, a memoir, or a coffee table book, we ensure your interior and cover files are hardcover-ready.

Starting at just $149 with free cover design and unlimited revisions, we make hardcover publishing accessible and affordable. We handle all file types and deliver within 48 hours.

What Hardcover Book Formatting Actually Covers

Hardcover formatting is a different engineering problem than paperback. The interior follows familiar rules — running heads, gutter margins, chapter openers, drop folios — but the cover wrap, paper choice, and binding mechanics shift the math in ways that catch first-time hardcover authors off guard. A paperback PDF cannot be repurposed as a hardcover without recalculating the cover and adjusting interior margins for the deeper gutter case binding eats up.

We format for KDP Print and IngramSpark. KDP Print accepts trim sizes from 5.5"x8.5" up to 7"x10"; IngramSpark adds larger options. Files are delivered as separate print-ready PDFs — one interior, one cover wrap — sized to the exact specs of the binding and page count.

Cover Types and Wrap Math

Three hardcover binding styles dominate POD. Case-bound — cloth-over-board with a separate dust jacket — is the premium look for literary fiction and prestige nonfiction; IngramSpark supports it, KDP Print does not. Case-laminate — a printed-paper cover bonded directly to the boards, no dust jacket — is the default on both platforms and what most indie hardcovers ship as. Padded covers, used for gift editions, add a foam layer between the cloth and the board.

Cover wrap dimensions are not just front + spine + back. You also need hinge (joint) margins of roughly 0.5" on each side of the spine, plus turn-in margins of about 0.625" on all four outer edges that wrap the boards. Spine width uses the same formula as paperback — pages times paper thickness — but hardcover paper stocks differ, so the per-page number changes.

Hardcover Paper and Dust Jackets

Interior paper for hardcover typically runs 60–70# (heavier than the 50# stock common in trade paperback), in white or cream by genre. Fiction usually uses 60# cream; illustrated nonfiction prefers 70# white. The heavier sheet feels right under boards — 50# paper feels flimsy in a cased binding.

Dust jackets follow their own template: front and back panels match the cover trim, plus two flaps. Industry-standard flap copy runs about 160 words on the front flap (description) and 100 words on the back flap (author bio). Endpapers — sheets glued to the inside of the boards — default to blank cream or white but can be designed with maps, patterns, or art at additional cost.

Why Authors Choose Hardcover Formatting

  • Library and gift-market positioning — the format institutional buyers expect
  • Higher cover price supports a healthier royalty per unit at lower volume
  • Case-laminate POD offers hardcover with no inventory commitment
  • Print-ready files for both KDP Print and IngramSpark from one project
  • Correct hinge, turn-in, and spine math so the wrap fits on first proof

FAQ

Can I use the same interior PDF for paperback and hardcover?
Usually not. Case binding consumes more gutter, so the inside margin typically needs to grow by 0.125–0.25". Paper weight also shifts, which changes the spine.

Does KDP Print support dust jackets?
No. KDP Print hardcover is case-laminate only — cover art prints directly on the boards. For cloth-bound editions with a dust jacket, use IngramSpark.

What trim sizes work for hardcover on KDP Print?
5.5"x8.5", 6"x9", 6.14"x9.21", and 7"x10", among others. IngramSpark offers a wider set including larger coffee-table trims.

How is spine width different from paperback?
Same formula, but hardcover uses 60# or 70# stock instead of 50#, so per-page thickness is greater and the spine ends up wider for the same page count.

Do you handle endpaper and dust jacket design?
Formatting covers the technical layout and template fit. Custom endpaper artwork and dust jacket illustration are design work, quoted separately.
