IngramSpark vs KDP — Which Print Channel Actually Pays Out

The choice between IngramSpark and Amazon KDP isn’t ideology — it’s reach, returns, and discount math. KDP Print prints books for Amazon’s storefronts (.com, .ca, plus the European mirrors); IngramSpark prints for Ingram, the wholesaler that Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Waterstones, Blackwell’s, indie bookstores, public libraries, and academic libraries actually order from. Both can print the same paperback. Only one gets it onto a shelf outside Amazon.

The Royalty Math

KDP pays 60% of list, minus print cost, on the .com store. IngramSpark pays the list price minus the wholesale discount you set (40% standard, 55% if you want bookstore stocking) minus the print cost. On a $14.99 trade paperback at 250 pages: KDP nets you about $4.45; IngramSpark at 40% nets about $4.49; IngramSpark at 55% nets about $2.24. The 55% number looks worse — it’s the price of having returnable copies on shelves where browsers actually find books.

The Returns Flag

Bookstores order on consignment-style terms. If you don’t enable returns, your title is invisible to buyers running Edelweiss or Ingram ipage searches with the “returnable” filter on, which is most of them. KDP can’t enable returns at all. IngramSpark can — and the returns-enabled / 55%-discount combination is the real cost of being shelvable.

ISBN & Imprint Control

KDP gives you a free ISBN, but the publisher of record becomes “Independently Published” on the copyright page, which some retailers treat as a junk-press signal. IngramSpark requires you to bring your own ISBN (or buy one from Bowker for ~$125), so the imprint name on the copyright page is yours. The same ISBN follows the book into Ingram’s feed to OverDrive, Baker & Taylor, Follett, and the OCLC library catalog.

Print Quality

KDP and IngramSpark both print at Lightning Source facilities for trade paperback, so the underlying machinery is the same. IngramSpark gives you actual cloth hardcover with dust jacket and cloth hardcover with foil-stamped spine; KDP only does case-laminate. IngramSpark also offers premium color (heavier, brighter paper) for illustrated books and cookbooks; KDP standard color is noticeably thinner and warmer.

The Right Setup For Most Authors

Run KDP Print for the Amazon channel and IngramSpark with returns enabled at 55% for bookstores, libraries, and the long tail of indie retailers. Don’t enable Amazon distribution from IngramSpark — Amazon’s algorithm pulls KDP-direct copies first, and the IngramSpark feed sits in “Temporarily out of stock” status.
