What Book Typesetting Actually Means
Typesetting is the craft of arranging type on the page for legibility and aesthetic effect. It is the discipline that turns a manuscript into something readers can spend hours inside without eye strain or visual fatigue. Where general editing and formatting decisions cover the whole production workflow, typesetting itself is narrower and older — it concerns the typeface, the size, the leading, the tracking, the figures, and the way every glyph relates to the glyphs beside it.
Typesetting is distinct from formatting. Formatting includes typesetting but also covers layout decisions: table-of-contents construction, image placement, running heads, folio positioning, chapter opening pages, and front-matter sequence. Typesetting is the typographic core inside that broader layout work. Both matter for a finished book, and both need conscious decisions rather than software defaults.
Typography fundamentals
Typeface selection is the first decision. Serif faces are conventional for body text in long-form reading because the serifs guide the eye along the line — Garamond, Caslon, Minion, and Sabon are common choices for trade fiction and non-fiction. Sans-serif faces such as Optima or Avenir work for chapter headings and display lines. Comic Sans and Papyrus are not appropriate for book interiors under any circumstance.
Body size sits between 10 and 12 points for trade fiction and 11 to 12 points for non-fiction, depending on the typeface’s x-height. Leading — the vertical space between baselines — typically lands at 13 to 15 points, which is roughly 120 to 130 percent of the body size. Tracking adjustments are used sparingly to control rivers (vertical white channels running through justified paragraphs) and to even out the typographic colour of the page. Optical refinements matter too: true small caps rather than scaled capitals, old-style figures for running text and lining figures for tabular data, and standard ligatures such as fi, fl, ffi, and ffl to avoid awkward letter collisions.
Page geometry and craft
The page itself is governed by proportion. The classical canon, derived from medieval manuscript practice and refined by Jan Tschichold, sets margins in a 1:1:2:2 ratio — inner 1, top 1, outer 2, bottom 2 — placing the text block in a position that feels balanced when the book is held open. Drop caps at chapter openings can be raised, sunken, or hung in the margin, with each style suiting a different genre register.
Widow and orphan control prevents single lines stranded at the top or bottom of a page. Hyphenation and justification settings are tuned to keep word spacing consistent. The final pass is a page-by-page typographic colour check: each two-page spread is examined to confirm that the gray density is even, that no spread looks heavier than its neighbours, and that the rhythm of the book reads as one continuous, considered piece of design.
Why Authors Choose Professional Typesetting
- Reading endurance. Correct body size, leading, and measure let readers stay in the book for long sessions without eye strain.
- Genre fit. A literary novel, a business book, and a memoir each call for different typographic registers, and the typeface choice signals genre to readers before the first sentence.
- Even typographic colour. Tracking, hyphenation, and widow control work together so every spread has consistent gray density rather than patchy or rivered pages.
- Print-ready geometry. Margins set to classical proportions account for the gutter, the trim, and the way a printed book actually opens in a reader’s hands.
- Typographic detail. Small caps, old-style figures, and proper ligatures lift a book from default-software output to something that reads as a deliberate object.
Frequently Asked Questions About Book Typesetting
Is typesetting the same as formatting?
No. Typesetting concerns the type itself — typeface, size, leading, tracking, figures, ligatures. Formatting is broader and includes typesetting plus layout decisions such as running heads, folios, image placement, and table-of-contents construction.
What body typeface should I use for a novel?
Serif faces designed for extended reading work best. Garamond, Caslon, Minion, and Sabon are conventional choices. The decision depends on x-height, contrast, and how the face renders at your chosen body size.
What body size and leading are standard for print?
Trade fiction sits at 10 to 12 points body with 13 to 15 points leading. Non-fiction often runs slightly larger at 11 to 12 points. Leading is typically 120 to 130 percent of the body size, adjusted for the typeface.
Why do margins look so wide in printed books?
The classical canon places margins in roughly a 1:1:2:2 ratio — inner, top, outer, bottom. The wider outer and bottom margins give the reader thumb-room, account for the gutter, and produce a balanced page when the book is held open.
Do small caps and old-style figures actually matter?
They matter for books that aim for a finished, readable interior. True small caps avoid the heavy look of scaled capitals, and old-style figures sit on the baseline rhythm of running text rather than disrupting it the way lining figures can.
